A Bit about the Turkish History
Talking about the history of Ottoman Turkish can be divided into 3 periods: Old Anatolian Turkish (ancient Ottoman language from 13th to 15th centuries), Ottoman Turkish (from 16th to 19th centuries) and Turkish of the 20th century.
In the 10th to 16th centuries, Turkish was influenced by Arab and Persian culture, however, in the text written in Anatolian Turkish, foreign words were rarely used. The reason is that in this period, there were made important measures for decreasing the impact of the other cultures, and the Turkish were against Arabic and Persian languages.
Interesting but from the 16th to 19th century, under the influence of other cultures, the Turkish language used in science and literature was filled with words from foreign languages. As there was no systematic way to limit the use of such words, many foreign words appeared in the Turkish language.
From 1923-1938, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s language reform had a significant meaning. The Latin alphabet was applied to the local letter system because Atatürk believed that in order to reach the modern civilization level it is important to use the Western culture. The foundation of the Turkish Language Association in 1932 was another significant step toward language reform. The main aim was to ensure that as many authentic Turkish words as possible were used in the written texts.
If before 1932, only 35-40% of authentic words were used in writing, in recent years this number has risen to 75-80%. This is proof that Atatürk’s language reform has received full public support.
Turkish has a lot of borrowings from the Persian language, which also had a lot of borrowings from the Arabic language. As a result of borrowings introduced, Ottoman Turkish was incomprehensible to the less educated layers of society. Ottoman Turkish made a great impact on the Turkish colloquial language.
